Have you ever been curious about emergency medicine outside of the hospital emergency room? In this class, we will be exploring the field of emergency medicine from a first responder perspective, under four broad themes: (i) air: space and aviation; (ii) water: diving, hurricanes, and tsunamis; (iii) fire: wildfires and volcanic eruptions; and (iv) earth: earthquakes and landslides.

We all know that bacteria and viruses tend to have bad reputations, but are they fully deserved? This class will offer a broad overview of basic bacterial and viral structure and function. We will consider their implications for humans and the environment, in addition to exploring their study in the lab.

It is (unfortunately) almost flu season, and you've probably already noticed that the cold is starting to go around. In this class, we will learn all about common respiratory illnesses -- specifically, the cold and the flu. We will delve into the basis of each, draw comparisons between the two, and learn how to best protect ourselves from catching them.

Have you ever wondered why you need to get a flu shot every year? Have you ever been curious about what happens inside your body after you get one? In this class, we will learn all about vaccines! We will explore the underlying science, the mechanisms behind specific vaccines, and their effects on human health and the population as a whole.

Why is it important to take care of your mental health? Join us as we break down this question and break down the topic of mental health. We'll talk about the dangers of neglecting mental health care and learn what it means to be mindful and aware of your thoughts and emotions.

Students will learn about the importance of sunscreen and general sun protection through a presentation. The module will include debunking sun protection myths, ways to protect yourself against the sun, and why sun protection is important.
